Let me tell you something about my family during the holidays:
We go all out.
Tinsel on everything, a playlist of Christmas songs that starts in November, and so many fairy lights that you can probably see our house from the moon.
But no matter how prepared we think we are…
Something always goes hilariously wrong.
This year?
It was a gift wrap.
🎁 Wrapping Night Madness
The night before Christmas Eve, we set up a wrapping station in the living room.
We had:
- 4 rolls of festive paper
- 3 kinds of ribbon
- A mountain of tape
- And zero idea what we were doing
Mom was wrapping for Dad.
Dad was wrapping for me.
I was wrapping for Grandma.
Grandma was supervising with cookies.
To stay organized, we labeled everything with sticky notes:
“DAD → MOM”
“ME → GRANDMA”
“SECRET SANTA → WHOEVER”
Or at least, we thought we did…
🧃 The Banana Incident
Christmas morning, we all gathered around the tree, mugs of hot cocoa in hand, ready to unwrap the magic.
Grandma picked up her gift — a shiny green box with a glittery bow.
She smiled, opened it slowly, dramatically (as grandmas do)… and pulled out…
A single banana.
Just one. Perfectly yellow. Not even a tag.
We all froze.
Then she burst out laughing.
“So this is what retirement tastes like?”
Turns out, I had placed my lunch banana in a gift box temporarily while wrapping her actual present.
And forgot.
The banana box got the bow.
The actual gift (a scented candle) ended up under the couch.
🤣 The Aftermath
Grandma thought it was the funniest thing ever.
She carried that banana around like a trophy the whole day. Even gave it a name: Banito.
My mom laughed so hard she snorted.
My dad added it to the family group chat as “Best Gift of the Year.”
And me?
I learned two things:
- Always double-check your gift boxes.
- Grandmas can find joy in anything — even fruit.
